Dog Obedience Training: How to Deal with Dog Behavioral Problems
Dogs basically subscribe to their own nature rather than listen to anyone else. As with any animal, dogs will basically do certain stuff that can annoy their owners. And as much as they want to, owners just can’t find the right approach to address a certain problem in behavior. Learn some basic dog obedience training technique to manage some of your dog’s errant behavior.
Still, there are tricks for them to follow and to apply for each behavior. It is only a matter of keeping one’s cool and avoid doing desperate stuff.
Incessant barking during the night
Nothing keeps an owner (literally) awake at night other than a noisy dog.
While we understand it’s a part of a dog’s nature to howl their lungs out when everyone has just hit the hay, howling can become a problem when a dog does it more often than desired.
We are not saying that you should go against nature here. But if you find that your dog’s constant midnight barking sprees are becoming a problem, it is time for you to step in and teach him the command “be quiet”!
It will take you a lot of time to perfect, but once your dog learns the meaning of the command, you can then rest easy (literally).
Chewing and biting on furniture
From the time they were pups to becoming full grown adults, dogs have a habit of chewing anything they see. And this is mainly the effect of boredom.
When your dog gnashes his teeth and rips your favorite towel to shreds, he is just looking for an outlet where he can vent all his pent up energy. Because let’s face it, there are dogs who want some action.
And by depriving them of any, they will eventually look for other things in the house they can lay waste upon. One way to solve this is to keep your dog busy with chew toys.
Also, always remind him that incessant chewing is bad by first presenting your hand and let him chew it. Then calmly resist and push him away. He will get the message eventually.
Digging holes in the yard
How about that habit of digging holes in the ground?
Part of a dog owner’s frustration is seeing their yard become a set for the 1969 moon landing. The reason why dogs do this is purely for fun.
So if it happens to give your dog some level of joy and excitement, digging can actually be diverted to a sandbox where your bestfriend can freely paw the ground to his heart’s content.
Chasing people and other animals
Dogs are natural predators, and this explains why they run after anything they see. From chickens to butterflies, dogs get a kick out of chasing anything.
Well, it’s all fun and games until an accident occurs. So as a dog owner, you should be able to handle your dog well and make sure he does not hurt himself while at play.
For this, training your dog to “heel” would be a good start. Aside from that, you can also train your dog to come to you and stop him from chasing after practically anything his predatory eyes can see.
Being aggressive
Does your dog bite, jump around and annoy people? Well, it only means that he has a domineering side and he wants to keep anything and anyone in check.
It shouldn’t bother you at all though but if it becomes an annoying problem, then you might want to train your dog into becoming more disciplined.
